Soul man from darwen I am 72 years old now started listening to northern soul in 19 69 at youth clubs my mate got the the records from a shop in Blackpool the man name was sandy symfonia record shop me my best mate started going to the Highland room Blackpool at the mecca my mate bob said have u ever tried bacardy and coke no I said he said u will then one Saturday night bob said we are not stopping at the Highland room long I said why because we are going to a allnigther at wigan casino he got to members cards I could no believe it got there frist record was tainted love the clapping was out of this world love it ktf to all the lost soulie u have past and u are still with us ktf from the soul man

To be honest, I have very mixed feelings about Wigan Casino. I didn't go on the opening night [23 September 1973] as there were rumours going around that it was going to be raided by the police/drug squad. So, I went the following weekend [30 September 1973] and never missed another Casino all-nighter for more than one and a half years. To be fair, that first year and a half was good. We would always go to the Catacombs in Wolverhampton first [we were Cats regulars from 1972] then catch the 'Gloucester coach' up to Wigan - arriving just as it opened. The 'crowd' at that time was made up of a lot of the Torch, Va-Va's, regulars [which I used to go to] as well as the other 'big' NS clubs of the early '70s. But from about late 1976/early 1977 Wigan [and Northern Soul generally] changed massively. The music at Wigan seemed to be getting sillier by the week and the crowd was now largely made up of 'tourists' and 'day-trippers' that had seen Jethro and his mates dancing on 'Top of the Pops' to Wigan's Chosen Few and decided to come and see what all the fuss was all about. Then in late 1977, Granada TV filmed its infamous documentary at Wigan Casino for their 'This England' series. I was there that night - and it was absolutely horrible. I couldn't wait for 8am to come so I could get out of the place. I never ever went back to Wigan. NEVER! I preferred going to Blackpool Mecca again [first went to the Mecca in 1972] and thought the crowd and atmosphere were much better. At the end of the day - Wigan played its part in continuing the 'journey' for the 'original' NS fans - but I can tell you now, clubs like the Torch pissed all over Wigan, and the Torch will always be the best all-nighter I ever went to bar none. Although I am glad I was a Casino regular from the time it first opened in Sept 1973, I also regret the impact it had on NS in the UK.

These collectors should certainly know what they're buying. I would guess they are buying these pressings as "fillers" since they will likely never find an original. Are they being presented as authentic original pressings, or is there no mention and the sellers are "buyers beware" ??

I was there. I saw some legendary acts at the Casino those years ago and had many, many epic nights there and other NS venues around the country with my lifelong friends. Still keeping the faith.

I remember the 'rain' dripping from the roof and ceilings from the heat in the Casino! I had to had shoes with leather soles that were slippery, for spins - still have them somewhere! Fittest I ever been dancing all night. Right up to the 'last three' and When tonight is all over.. The bloody council should have kept its hands off the club, it was the biggest money spinner for Wigan and they destroyed it WELL DONE - MUPPETS!💔 Theres one song that sums it up Frank Wilson...........for the Casino........DO I LOVE YOU - INDEED I DO. Just watched this film. She hates him. As she should, he’s a hate able character. Then, cut to next scene and she virtually his girlfriend with no explanation of how that happened. Great writing😂

I my self was into soul during the mid seventies.wigan along with all the other clubs and venues.the music was and still is fantastic .loads of artists on my phone.the 60 s stuff the mods along with soul and motown altogether brill.

I went there 1979-1981, Sweaty" Pushing" and fight your way to the dancefloor, But had so many great happy soulful times there as a young Mad Soulie, But all good things must come to an end, Keep-The-Faith, ✊PATCH✊

i lived in Wigan late 60s early 70s Standish was a posh place xx ive always loved this soul dancing and its music ,i wish i had gone to the Casino for a fab night out x lol Jane x

Please god & the sweet baby cheeses, make it stop....this is so far removed from the original Northern Soul Scene & the current 'real' NS Scene (as opposed to these clowns & the people who 'follow' them) as to be on another planet. THIS pile of sh*te has nothing to do with Northern Soul, past, present or future. This is why we got into Northern Soul, to get away from the mainstream, Stuart Maconie IS not a representative of this music, just another BBC presenter who claims to have some NS heritage, which was so embarrassingly wrong, misleading & out of touch. Do yourselves a favour, if you genuinely have an interest in obscure black American dance music, avoid the media circus & scratch the seedy underbelly of the current scene, to find a small, vibrant but authentic scene which still shuns the mainstream & glorifies the forgotten sound of black America....interested ???, then go find the real deal, not this awful pastiche...

Northern Soul fakes go back to as far as the early-to-mid 70's... such as my blue label Lou Pride single, which I still happily play, as the sound quality is truely good. 😊 Oh, and even as an obvious fake it has been rated at £50 by a specializing online community.

Totally agree with @thesoultwins comments. I went from 74-to around 2005, still do the Mecca/Ritz revival in Manchester, I have to say, everyone (still alive) from my era feels the first 5-6 years of all-nighters you do, is like being with an extended family and getting a buzz off new tunes. Whether to dance to or collect the vinyl. Nobody really wanted Granada TV that winters night in the Casino, and the thought of films being made off the back of it appalled us back then. Having said that I thought the Soul Boy film was fair at best ! Although I really wish I could “unsee” the Blue Juice clip 😅

It is impossible for anyone to truly understand the magic that was Wigan Casino, the sounds were incredible, made for the venue, the atmosphere was electric, the energy and excitement was everywhere. It was spiritual. I love the acapella from Edwin Starr, one of the best to ever play the Casino live. Memories of a time and place that will never die.

I met Nick a few times in the late 70's he was on at the Carlton Warrington and did a soul night in Sutton St Helens. He had a good ear for music first time I heard Terry Callier "Look At Me Know" was when he played in his set around 1980.

I went in 1978/9 used to climb out of my bedroom window onto the roof then down a drainpipe meet my mates & go wigan casino.. I returned To my bed the same way. Mum never new I used to go. My fave track is woman love thief stemmons express. Ian.. Keep on keeping on❤
